BRACE ambassador and director of Care Campaign for the Vulnerable (CCFTV), Jayne Connery, has abseiled down Cape Town’s Table Mountain in South Africa to raise funds dementia research.

Her daring feat descending one of the seven natural wonders of the world has raised £4,000 for the charity.

The abseil almost didn’t take place due to strong winds forcing the challenge to be postponed for safety reasons. On Wednesday 23rd April, just 24 hours later, an undeterred Jayne stood on the cliff side and descended 112 metres!

Incredibly, Jayne has a fear of heights and facing her fears was done so for a very personal reason.

Jayne’s late mother, Ellen, lived with dementia and sadly faced care challenges. The struggle to find advice and support at a vulnerable time led Jayne to set up CCFTV more than 13 years ago.

Supporting people directly affected by dementia is the focus of Jayne’s work at CCFTV but, ultimately, a cure for dementia is what Jayne hopes to see her in lifetime.

Jayne is a passionate supporter of BRACE and the work the charity is doing to better understand dementia, improve early diagnosis, develop new treatments and one day, defeat dementia.

Jayne shares:

“This challenge was very personal to me, and it’s dedicated to my late mother, Ellen, whose journey with dementia has been a driving force behind my commitment to people affected by dementia and their care. Caring well for people with dementia is crucial, but ultimately, we need a cure for dementia. BRACE offers hope that families, like mine, will one day live in a dementia free world.”

Chris Williams, CEO of BRACE Dementia Research says:

“A huge thank you and well done to Jayne for her commitment to dementia research. It is truly inspiring to see the efforts she has gone to in support of the charity. Thanks to supporters like Jayne, we are getting closer and closer to defeating dementia.”
