What is Dementia?
Everyone knows about dementia... or at least they think they do.
More than "just a senior moment"
It isn't a normal part of ageing. It's not just for the elderly. It isn't just about memory. It can be defeated
Dementia is the UK's leading cause of death, and impacts 1 in 2 British Adults... but it's still widely misunderstood. BRACE is here to cure dementia once and for all, and you can help us. Not just by donating, but through understanding the condition and spreading awareness.
So What is Dementia?
Dementia is a group of symptoms associated with a decline of brain function. This includes symptoms such as memory loss, language difficulties, using words incorrectly and problems with understanding.
And How are BRACE curing it?
BRACE can fund research into any type of dementia, and research grants in recent years have focused on four main areas. These include Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia and frontotemporal dementia.
BRACE provide funding for PhD research, pilot studies, and vital research equipment. We're one of only three charities in the UK who provide this kind of support, and we are totally reliant on the public for donations. We're a small team who make a big impact - If you want to see what we're capable of, check out our Impact Report, or click here to read more.
Is it the same as Alzheimer's Disease?
For a while, there has been a common, widespread misconception about the term “Alzheimer’s”, which has wrongly been used to describe all types of memory-related conditions. Although Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent type of dementia accounting for about 60-75% of dementia cases, it is important to note that it is not the only one.
Other types include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Wernicke-Korsakoff’s dementia, and the dementias related to Parkinson’s disease or Huntington’s disease. Patients may also have mixed dementia, where more than one type is present.
