Capital One Challenges Dementia
This Dementia Action Week (19th - 25th May), we're inviting you to take part in a quick brain health quiz in support of our charity partner, BRACE Dementia Research.
Dementia is not a single disease but an umbrella term for a range of progressive diseases that affect the brain. It describes a set of symptoms that includes problems with memory, problem-solving, language and behaviour. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases. Other types include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.
Dementia affects millions of people globally, with approximately 55 million people living with dementia worldwide. This number is expected to almost double every 20 years, reaching 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050, making dementia one of our most pressing health challenges.
The financial impact of dementia is substantial, with estimates showing that dementia costs the UK economy approximately £42.5 billion annually. This includes healthcare costs, social care, and unpaid care by families.
Common symptoms of dementia include:
- Memory loss that disrupts daily life
- Challenges in planning or solving problems
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks
- Confusion with time or place
- Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
- Difficulty communicating - speaking or writing
Keeping your brain healthy is key to reducing the risk of developing dementia later in life. To maintain a healthy brain, there are various factors that research has shown can make a significant difference. Regular physical activity promotes better blood flow to the brain, while staying socially connected creates mental stimulation through meaningful interactions. Quality sleep is equally important, allowing the brain to perform essential maintenance and memory consolidation processes.
By participating in this quiz and donating to BRACE Dementia Research, you're directly supporting vital research into the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of dementia.
