Did you know:
- Alzheimer's Disease is the most common form of dementia, with 55% of dementia sufferers being affected.
- Dementia currently affects approximately 750,000 people in the UK and this figure may double by the year 2050 as the population ages. However, dementia is a global issue with nearly 18 million people affected worldwide.
- Dementia affects 1 in 20 of the over 65s and 1 in 5 of the over 80s but it should not be thought of as a normal part of ageing. People as young as 40 can be affected, although this is rare.
- In Avon alone there are 15,000 dementia sufferers
- Funds for Alzheimer's research in the NHS and Universities are inadequate, receiving less than 5% of that spent on cancer research. The impact of both illnesses on family life is severe but at present there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease.
