Dementia Research is 'Cinderella'
Today's headline news about dementia will shock many people, but not those engaged in the fight against dementia.
Figures published today show that an estimated 822,000 people (15% more than previously thought) have dementia. The number is expected to pass one million by 2025. The cost to the UK is £23 billion a year, but the suffering it causes is immeasurable.
Despite the growing numbers of people with dementia, the amount of money invested in research remains pitifully low compared with other medical research. New figures show that 12 times as much is spent on cancer research as on dementia (5 times as much per cancer patient as per dementia patient).
BRACE Chief Executive Mark Poarch said, "Dementia is still a Cinderella when money is allocated for medical research. There is very important and exciting research taking place, some of it right here in Bristol and the surrounding area, but it relies heavily on charitable donations to keep it going.
"People in the West Country and beyond have been hugely supportive of BRACE in the 23 years since it was founded. Their generosity and determination has made an important difference to medical knowledge. We might be a local charity, but the impact of the research we support is global."
He added that he is looking for businesses and other organisations to adopt BRACE as their charity of the year and help it raise funds for the fight against dementia.
